A Thousand Days and a Day, was begun in 1996, inspired by my friend, music pioneer Kip Hanrahan, when he embarked in a musical rendition of the Arabian Nights in the late 1990s. Having loved the notion of labyrinths, I decided to create a hexagon made up of six paintings. Five years later, unplanned, a 2nd batch was created, followed in 2006 by a 3rd and final batch comprising 18 panels in all within three hexagons. Although the series’ title is borrowed from the historical Arabian Nights fables, it was changed from Nights to Days due to my work being about light and hope.
Musically, subtitles were incorporated adapting pop-music modular composer Brian Wilson’s acclaimed SMiLE (a Zen piece with the notion of healing via laughter) to all panels. Since then, the 1st six paintings were unfortunately damaged and abandoned. That was until 2025 when it was decided to have these works revisited, elaborating a fusion of the then (1996) and gestural approaches of today with, in my opinion, positive results…

… A Thousand Days and a Day, in its entirety, is NOT designed to promote America’s already famous Beach Boys’ legacy, but rather to confirm how great works of music can inspire visual art, as perhaps many paintings once upon a time inspired Modest Mussorgsky to compose his classic, ‘Pictures at an Exhibition’. Now, with the completion of this batch of Fusion Paintings, 2026 will finally realize the entire installation to the public.
